Although National Fire Prevention Week is officially observed during the week (from Sunday to Saturday) in which October 9th falls, fire prevention and safety awareness should be a concern that lasts the whole year.
In Canada, Fire Prevention Week was first proclaimed by the Governor-General in 1923 to commemorate the Great Chicago fire and as a way to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention.
Fire Prevention Canada, a Canadian charitable organization has actively promoted FPW since 1976.
The non-profit NFPA, (National Fire Protection Association) which has officially sponsored Fire Prevention Week since its inception, selects the annual theme for Fire Prevention Week.
Properly working smoke alarms are now the law. You must have at least one on every floor of your home. It's also smart to have alarms in the bedrooms. Make sure you test your alarms regularly. *Source NFPA
Installing and maintaining working Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms is essential. Purchasing and learning how to use Fire Extinguishers and Escape Ladders will also increase your level of safety.
Nobody ever thinks it will happen to them.
It’s a tragic reality but fire can strike when we least expect it. It’s so sad when we hear the news of homes and families that weren’t prepared. Take action today!
According to the National Fire Protection Association, you may have as little as 2 minutes to escape a burning residence. Seconds could mean the difference between escaping safely or facing tragedy.
Everyone needs to have a Fire Escape Plan. Draw a map of your household and mark 2 exits from each room. Practice your Home Fire Drill twice per year. Download your FREE Fire Safety Guide for more details.
In collaboration with Fire Prevention Canada, LifeReady has created a 12-page, comprehensive guide full of Fire Safety information and best practices to help you become better prepared.
